Production Process of Tape
The tape production process is straightforward, involving a carrier material and an adhesive. Tape suppliers use a process called coating, where adhesive glue is applied to the carrier material. There are three main coating methods: water-based coating, solvent coating, and hot-melt coating.
Water-Based Coating
This method involves mixing the adhesive with water to create emulsions, where small droplets of one liquid are suspended in another. The resulting solution is then coated onto the surface of the carrier material.
Solvent Coating
In this method, a solvent dissolves the adhesive to create a less viscous liquid. This liquid glue is coated onto the carrier material, and the solvent is then removed by passing the tape through a heated oven.
Hot-Melt Coating
As the name suggests, this method involves heating the adhesive until it melts. The hot liquid glue is then coated onto the carrier material, and the tape is allowed to cool to form the finished product.
Once a sheet of tape is finished, it may undergo additional converting processes before shipping. These processes include winding the sheet into large rolls, slitting the large rolls into smaller strips, or die cutting. These steps prepare the tape for the forms commonly found in stores.
How Is an Adhesive Tape Constructed?
Adhesive tape is the term used to describe single- and double-sided self-adhesive strips or webs that are available to the user in various roll formats. Depending on the type of tape, in addition to the adhesive they also contain carriers and intermediate carriers as well as release liners that cover the adhesive.
The uses of adhesive tapes are extremely diverse and can include applications such as mounting, packaging, surface protection, sealing, insulation, soundproofing, process aid or repair. The many areas of application also account for the large number of adhesive tape types, which can differ greatly in terms of structure, raw materials and performance. What are the functions of the various adhesive tape components and which variants are available?
Adhesive
The adhesive plays a major role in determining the quality of an adhesive tape, because its properties must match the intended use. Parameters such as adhesive strength, internal strength, processing temperature, temperature resistance, compatibility with the surfaces to be bonded and other characteristics are decisive. Carrier, Intermediate Carrier
The carrier material of an adhesive tape carries the adhesive, but also has a functional task. Release Liner

Can-Do employs a variety of methods to slit and rewind flexible materials to achieve the best quality edge. We employ Razor, Score, and Shear slitting technology. Slip differential rewind shafts ensure clean edges and consistent, evenly-wound rolls.
Sheeting
Our streamlined process allows us to economically “sheet” products such as foam, felt, foils, and thin gauge plastics, including hook and loop. Sheeting can be employed in-line with die-cutting processes.
Printing
Utilizing multiple, versatile printing presses allows us to print up to three colors of text or logos on labels and carton sealing tapes, as well as deposit adhesive backing onto other non- adhesive products.
Precision Custom Slitting
Our state-of-the art log slitter gives us the power to precisely slit (slice) rolls of flexible materials into smaller segments. We can slit certain materials to as narrow as 1 mm wide.
Laminating
Can-Do has the ability to laminate rolled or sheet materials up to 64 inches wide. Our heat-assisted laminators can laminate pressure-sensitive adhesive, heat seal films, and web adhesive to numerous substrates, at a range of temperatures. Heat-assisted lamination helps to maintain a consistent and uniform bond throughout the roll.
Die Cutting / Kiss Cutting
Our production facility operates several rotary and steel rule die cutting presses to provide our customers with numerous options. We utilize high speed, tight tolerance rotary tooling, up to 18″ wide for smaller/thinner materials. For thicker, more rigid materials we employ flatbed steel rule dies that can accommodate material up to 60″ x 54″.

Q: How do I apply custom packaging tape?
A: For high volume applications, you will save time by using a water-activated tape dispenser. If you are sealing only a few packages at a time, simply moisten the non-printed side of the tape with a wet sponge and apply.
